If you are an engineer working also as a producer your rate should be a flat fee or percentage of the total budget agreed to before the project starts.The people paying should know up front that the producer/engineer is not going to be giving up his paycheck for the artists lack of talent or inability to “get it right” after take 25.Maybe that is why the “vocal pitch corrector” that is on every song is so overused.Screw getting it correct, go right to the effects to cover up the crap.
Pay based on what’s left over from the budget?? That sounds like a producer not an engineer. I worked as an engineer for an in house advertising agency that had it’s own studio. I was called in and paid either by a pre arranged price for the entire project (which meant putting in as much time as needed) or pay me $25.00 an hour with a minimum of 4 hours. This was back in the 1990′s and seemed reasonable. Today would be much more.

People seem to think that they can enter the music business and be some overnight success story with instant gratification from day one.
